Villette

Author: Charlotte Bronte
Genre: Life, romance
My rating on a 1-10 scale: 7.5
Type: Fiction
Number of pages: Around 650
Time period: Early 1800's
Main characters: Lucy, Paulina, Paul, John/Graham
Exciting events: A mysterious personage...
My overall opinion: This book has very mild romance, and you don't know who it's going to be until the very end! It was a fun read, but as you can see it was very long and took me several days. It got a little tiring by the end. Another annoying thing was that it had a lot of French phrases and conversations. Not so much as to impede my understanding of the book, but enough to be rather annoying. Overall: takes some patience to read, but can be worth it.

  1. The only Charlotte Bronte book that I read was Jane Eyre. When you said something about the French phrases, I knew what you meant; I didn't really care for that because I wanted to know what was being said.

  2. I enjoyed Jane Eyre more than this one. If you read this, have you seen a movie of Jane Eyre? I saw the long one with Timothy Dalton, that seemed quite accurate to the book.
I always wondered what they were saying too, but since I don't know French...:( Oh well.

  3. I've seen two versions of the movie (1944 and 1996) and bits and pieces of the long one from 1983. But yeah, I would get to the French parts and I would be a little confused. I was partly hoping for a translation, but oh well.

  4. Okay, I haven't seen those other two. I should see if Mom will let me. :) I wonder if there is a version anywhere of Villette that's all in English, French having been translated? I'll have to look on Amazon sometime. :)
