North and South

Author: Elizabeth Gaskell
Genre: Romance, life
My rating on a 1-10 scale: 8.5
Type: Fiction
Number of pages: 415
Time period: 1800's
Main characters: Margaret, Mr. Thornton, the Hales, Bessy, Higgins
Exciting events: A strike, a death, several deaths, and more
Passage from book or back cover: "One word more. You look as if you thought it tainted you to be loved by me. You cannot avoid it. Nay, I, if I would, cannot cleanse you from it. But I would not, if I could. I have never loved any woman before: my life has been too busy, my thoughts too much absorbed with other things. Now I love, and will love. But do not be afraid of too much expression on my part."
My overall opinion: You know what? I enjoyed this book. I wasn't really expecting to, simply because I really don't like the movie much. But having read the book for this second time, I think that I need to see the movie again. I recommend this book!

  1. I haven't read all of this book, but what I did read, I enjoyed. =) And I intend to read it through when I can. (Too many good books, not enough time!!) Be sure to review the movie when you watch it again! (Unless you already have?)

  2. I'm so glad you enjoyed the book! I've actually only read it once, but I loved it so much! Before I watched the film I wanted to read the book and I enjoyed it so much, and the adaptations was very well done (by the same lady who did Emma 2009) and even though they changed the final scene I really enjoyed the miniseries too. N&S is on my list of books to re-read this year but I need to buy my own copy!

  3. Miss Laurie and Melody: you both need to read the whole thing. :) It's good.

Melody, no, I haven't reviewed the movie yet. But I will once I convince Mom that I need to see it! :)

Miss Laurie, it is a good book to own. :) I got a copy for Christmas 09 and have read it twice. That's something I noticed but forgot to mention: I like the book last scene better than the movie last scene. Or proposal scene, or whatever you call it.

  5. Jemimah, I wasn't too crazy about the movie, but I know many of my friends absolutely love them! I think I'm going to watch it again. :) I'm a girl who likes cheerful happy things, and there is just a lot of gray in that movie. But none-the-less...I think you should try it!

Hi! I'm delighted you're leaving a comment! Thank you so much - comments make my day. Just make sure that yours is polite, free of bad language, and that it honors God. :) I will probably not reply to your comment, much as I would love to - my life is simply for too busy. Sorry! But again, thanks for commenting.
