Movie: Becoming Jane

My rating on a 1-10 scale: 8

Genre: Period drama, biography, life

Primary actors: Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy, Julie Walters, Anna Maxwell Martin, Maggie Smith

Length: About two hours

Based on: Jane Austen’s life

Time period: 1800s

Rating: PG

Year it came out: 2011

My overall opinion: I enjoyed this movie rather more than I expected to! Anne Hathaway wasn’t bad as Jane, though younger and prettier than the real Jane, I think. And James McAvoy as the main guy! Never did decide exactly what I thought of that. It was certainly a very interesting casting choice. I just know him as Mr. Tumnus in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe so. The movie seemed well-filmed and moved along at a good pace – kept me watching. Not riveting, but. Unfortunately, due to a problem with my ear-buds and my DVD player, I had trouble hearing – the music way overpowered the dialogue. I didn’t realize this problem was fixable until quite a bit later. This hampered my enjoyment. Thus the very average rating. There was, as is warned about, brief nudity – not sensual, just a bit awkward. All in all? I’ll watch it again so I can hear the dialogue. Didn’t love, didn’t hate.

Ohmygoodness.....it's been a long, long time since I've even thought of this movie!! I quite remember enjoying it, though obviously the end kills me a little bit lol. I think Anne is probably much prettier than Jane was as well.

I'm going to have to rewatch this one :) Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I was interested in watching this movie AWHLE ago, but due to content my parents didn't want me to watch it. But personally I think that speculating on a women's life that we know very little about can be dangerous and deceiving - deceiving in the senses that you seem to be saying this IS what happened when really we know very very little (precious little) about this supposed love affair/young man.

On the other hand, I really like James mcavoy's acting, and since most of his movies are inappropriate I'm always eager to find one that isnt, with him in it. Maybe someday I'll watch this with skipping scenes (or using clear play to take out unneeded conversations/phrases) I have only seen Mcavoy In two movies - narnia (which he did a good job in though he seemed a little strange. Unlike the book Tumnus who was cute!) and the other movie with him in it is called Penolope, maybe you've heard of it? After watching that movie (in which he had the role of one of the main characters) I decided he was an actor I enjoyed =) I supose it could be classified as a chick-flick, but I enjoyed it immensely. :) it was very sweet and cute!

I hope you like long comments - if not, I apologies with deepest regrets! (Though I doubt that is the case..)

I actually have this movie -- it was a gift a couple of years (!) ago, and I still haven't managed to watch it. I'll bump it up on my to-watch list now.

Enjoyed this one, too though I'm pretty sure it's historically inaccurate. Still... considering Anne is American, she did a nice job with the iconic role and believe it or not, James was awesome as a leading man - same goes for his role in Penelope which is adorable in a quirky kind of way. :)
