My rating on a 1-10 scale: 9 (or maybe 9.25...or maybe even 9.5 -- yes, I think it is a 9.5!)
Genre: Romance, classic
Primary actors: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Northum
Length: About two hours
Based on: Emma by Jane Austen
Time period: 1800’s
Quote(s): {{Emma is asking Mr. Elton for a riddle for Harriet’s book – Mr. Knightley happens to walk away, saying:}} “You didn’t ask me for riddle.” {{Emma’s immediate reply:}} “Your whole personality is a riddle, Mr. Knightley. I thought you overqualified.”
Year it came out: 1996
My overall opinion: You know, I really enjoyed it. Some of the quotes (like the one above which I have attempted to reproduce) were hilarious. Emma delivered her lines with such a perfect spirit! Mr. Knightley was very handsome, Miss Bates was amazing. I didn’t like how tightly Emma’s hair was pulled back. But Mr. Knightley more than made up for any disappointment. Like I said, some of it was so funny! Not in the comedy sense, but it definitely would make you laugh. I’d say this is a wonderful Emma, and even if you’re a die-hard fan of the 2009 version, try this one. J
You may have noticed I didn’t say much about my specific thoughts on characters…coming soon, Emma character comparisons, like the Pride and Prejudice ones done recently!

Did you like this one more than the one with Romola Garai in it???
Not quite, but it was close. :) There were some things I greatly preferred, though not many. :) Keep an eye on the comparisons coming soon for a blow by blow comparison. :) Have you seen this one? The others? What do you like?
I really liked this Emma and prefer it over the newest version (though the latter was more true to the book).
Yes, the sparing btwn Mr. Knightly and Emma is well done. Short, quick lines delivered with firmness and the right spirit make for a very laughable movie! :)
Mary Beth, interesting. :)
Kathryn, love a laughable movie (provided it's laughable in a good way). ;)
