C. S. Lewis Day: The Movies

There are more than you might be aware of... :)

First, there are the old ones. And I just discovered a new old one. Apparently in 1979, a comic version came out.

Then in 1988, they came out with this one:

I watched this. It was terrible. There's a full rant about it on this blog, since I reviewed it several months ago.

And then, oh joy.

The 2005 version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. It's totally awesome, and while not perfect to the book in a few semi-minor things, it is a excellent watch.

Soon after, in 2008:

Love. I love that movie. Now I should mention here that there is an objectionable scene...namely, some pretty serious black magic. I always skip that. A few other things are also added (eg, romance between Caspian and Susan), but overall, I like the movie better than the book.

And now, in December 2010, Voyage of the Dawn Treader came out. I saw it twice in theaters, but not since then, so hopefully soon, another review will be coming from my watching it again!

I liked it. Yes, I know, it strayed from the book, but the essentials (to me) were still there. I recommend it.

Now there was, also in the 1980's, a combined version of Prince Caspian and Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and it's another that I haven't seen. However, if it's anything like the old LWW, it's not worth it.

They had animated LWW (abbreviation I made up on the spot)? :O

The BBC Narnia aren't awful! I like them (though I don't like the fake animals).

But, yah, the new Narnia movies beat all! The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is my favourite. Black magic in Prince Caspian? When?

I use the abbreviations LWW, PC, and VDT absolutely ALL the time. :)

Here's my review of the old LWW: http://austenitis.blogspot.com/2010/12/movie-lion-witch-and-wardrobe.html

It could have been worse, but I was comparing it to the new ones, so. :)

Black magic in PC...when they call back the White Witch? There's a hag and a werewolf? Yeah.

I think out of the Disney versions, I liked the Voyage of the Dawn Treader best... Prince Caspian was just 'ergh' for me... and the first was good. I'm just a bigger fan of the BBC versions.

But that's just me=)

I, personally, don't like the old Narnia movies either... but, i *did* grow up watching them, before the new ones came out, so every once in a while I pull them out to re-watch them (and make fun of them... *cough, cough*). :D

Yah, but it that was in the book. And anway the hag and werewolf were bad...so of course they do bad things!

I lkied the BBC version. In some ways I liked it better than the Hollywood version. :)

Oh, my favorite C S Lewis movie so far is Shadowlands. :)

AuntLou, I'm ashamed to say I've never heard of that one! I will have to look it up. :)

Alyianna, no, it actually wasn't in the book. I just looked it up and the werewolf, hag, and Nikabrik are discussing trying to bring the WWitch back. Trying to convince Dr. Cornelius, Caspian, and the Badger (Trufflehunter), but it ends up in a fight. Turns out, Peter, Edmund, and Trumpkin were listening outside the door and go help...in the end, killing the bad ones and the good all live. :) So.

I was teasing, a little. It's about "Jack," rather than based on his writings. :) It really is my favorite, so far.

This is the first time I've heard of the comic version.

I'm with you when it comes to the BBC edition. I thought it was all mismatched.

I love the 2005 version! It was superb!

Uh, no. I disliked Prince Caspian. For me, it lost the sense of "Narnia-ness" in it. I was seething about the Caspian-Susan romance!

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was a lot better than Prince Caspian. They changed some things, which I wasn't too happy about. I thought the sword thing was cheesy. But because they kept the inherent messages in the book, I did like the movie in some way.

Yes, that's right. I just meant that there was the same scene, even if the same things didn't happen in it.
